Snacking as a whole always gets a bad rep in the healthy eating spectrum. This is because they’re usually baked, fried or contain sugar or preservatives that could totally tip all the hard work you’ve been putting into your body, health and fitness. But that doesn’t mean it’s easy to go cold turkey and simply cut snacking off from your routine, is it? Faced with this conundrum, the only solution we see is healthy snacking. Yes, you heard it right!

Freeze Dried Snacks

HALO freeze dried fruits were born from this need for healthy snacks that are also tasty. It is always one without the other and these snacks were launched to put an end to that. But snacks are always taken with a pinch of salt (not literally!) and there are some myths surrounding freeze dried fruit snacks that make people unsure about purchasing them.

To debunk these myths, let’s first see how they’re made and then journey on from there!

The HALO journey:

Factoring in the process of how freeze dried fruit snacks are made can go a long way in debunking all the myths surrounding these snacks. Well, the process is as simple as it can get! Fresh fruit from farms across the country is picked and shipped to specially designed manufacturing units with precision scientific equipment. These fruits then go through a simple process called lyophilisation to become what they are in a cute, little HALO packet!

Step 1: Fruit pieces are cut and frozen at extremely low temperatures.

Step 2: Using the principles of sublimation, the solid water inside the fruits is directly converted to vapour.

Step 3: Ta-da! That’s it. You’re left with bite-sized crunchy pieces of fruit, ready to be packed.

This leads us to our first misconception: Freeze dried fruit snacks are not healthy.

Myth debunked: These snacks are made by just removing water content from fresh fruit. So, most of the nutrition gets packed into the remaining fruit, making it an extremely healthy snack. Fruits are rich in good carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, iron and a lot of other trace elements that can boost metabolism and reduce the risk of a plethora of diseases. But now that you know freeze dried fruits are crispy fruits, you don’t need an introduction to its benefits!

Furthermore, the process also clears another myth: Freeze dried fruits contain sugar or other preservatives, making them unhealthy.

HALO freeze dried fruits are produced in the most transparent and high-quality way possible. Our R&D team makes sure that we give you nothing but the healthiest snack we can. To prove this, all you have to do is try eating a packet of our snacks. Each bite has a unique and completely natural sweet-sour taste that is only found in fresh fruits. The only addition here is the crunch factor. The taste should be enough to convince you that it’s not artificially sweet and contains no added sugar.

This segues perfectly into myth #3: How is it crunchy if it’s not baked or fried?

Baking or frying uses oil in varying degrees to achieve the desired crunch. The process of freeze drying achieves the same crunch but by removing the water from the fruit with high-quality equipment and a thorough process. So, to sum up, there is no oil in this snack, giving it a natural crunch.

Moving on to another myth that has to do with its shelf life. Many people become sceptical and don’t believe that freeze dried fruit snacks last for months together when compared to fresh fruit that rots after a week or so. The answer lies in the process again. Up to 95% of the water content is removed from the fruit when they are processed. The water inside the fruit contains microbes that react to cause rot. Without the water, that microbial reaction is cut off, making it long-lasting. This means that you can now have seasonal fruits all year round! The only tip when it comes to storage is to keep it sealed in an airtight container.

Before we wrap this up, here’s one final myth that we want to bust: freeze dried fruit snacks are chewy and not very pleasant to eat.

This is an understandable assumption since they are usually mistaken for dried fruits. The key difference here is that dried fruits retain about 1/3rd of their original water content, thereby making them chewy. But since the freeze drying process ensures that the fruit doesn’t have any water left in it, there is no way it can be chewy! In fact, it is the perfect snack replacement because it satisfies your craving for something sweet and something crunchy.
